How do I copy a page from one course to another?

Instead of recreating a page, it is sometimes faster or easier to copy it from one course to another, and then make any necessary edits there. Here's a step-by-step guide on how you can do that.

Note - to copy a page from one course to another, you will need to:

  • be a course administrator in both courses,
  • understand what a course URL is,
  • understand what a course page URL is

Copying/Duplicating a page is similar to copying a sheet of paper with a photocopier: you need a sheet of paper - the original (step 1) which you place in the machine to copy (step 2). When the new copy comes out, you have to pick it up and put it away in its place (a folder system etc), (step 3).

A course URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the reference/address to your course. Typically, the URL of courses on OpenLearning follows this pattern:

https://www.openlearning.com/courses/your_course

If your course belongs to an institution, the pattern would be:

https://www.openlearning.com/your_institution/courses/your_course

Each course consists of multiple pages. Each page has its own URL, the pattern is:

https://www.openlearning.com/courses/your_course/your_page

for example:

https://www.openlearning.com/courses/HowtoMakeCoffee/AllAboutCofeebeans

For the purpose of this guide, I will copy a page called How to use this course from a Floral styling from events course to Floral design sketching course. Here we go.

Step 1:

Go to the page you'd like to copy.

example: https://www.openlearning.com/bloom-floristry-school/courses/floral-styling-for-events/how_to_use_this_course/

Step 2:

Click on Settings which opens a pop-up. Choose the Copy tab.

Step 3:

In this step, we will create the URL of the duplicate.

You will see something like this:

In this text box, we have to type the path to where we'd like to copy the page.

You can delete the suggested page path, we won't need it.

Now, we are copying this page

https://www.openlearning.com/bloom-floristry-school/courses/floral-styling-for-events/how_to_use_this_course

to this course

http://www.openlearning.com/bloom-floristry-school/courses/floral-design-sketching

by creating the following page URL

http://www.openlearning.com/bloom-floristry-school/courses/floral-design-sketching/how_to_use_this_page

We will skip the htp://www.openlearning.com/ part and type the rest of the URL + page path without the spaces, so what we type is:

bloom-floristry-school/courses/floral-design-sketching/how_to_use_this_page

Click Copy page.

When the page is finished copying, you are automatically taken to that new page.

Note: You can't copy a page to a page that already exists! The platform copies/duplicates the page by creating a new one. If the page with that page URL already exists, choose a different path. (e.g. if /how_to_use_this_page already exists, try /how_to_use_this_page2)

Step 4:

Now that the page is copied in the course, we need to add it to a module.

Go to Course Design > Content Editor.

Click on Add a page in the module where you want the page to be.

Start typing the page title and the page will pop up for you to click and add to the module.

You're now done!
