Setting your course start date

Setting a start date for your course means that enrolled students cannot access the course until that date occurs.

After you've turned your course online, we recommend setting a start date for your course in a few weeks to a month from now, instead of making it accessible right away.

For example, if you turn your course online on the 1st June, we recommend setting the start date for the 1st August.

Why? Because setting a future start date enables you to:

  • maximise the time you have to promote your course and build up enrolments
  • gain a group of students who will begin the course together, enhancing the social experience of the course. (Imagine that instead of students trickling in, you have a river of students who all kick things off together)

To do this, follow these steps.

Go to Administer Students > Timeline

Set a start date on your class.

When a start date is set, un-enrolled students will see the Course Landing Page like this:

When a student enrols, they will see this message on the Course Landing Page:

We also recommend enabling the Course Start Email, so pre-enrolled students will be reminded when the course starts.

Go to Course Setup > Advanced and scroll down to the Miscellaneous section.

Tick the Course Start Email.

to remind pre-enrolled students when the course goes live and they can begin progressing through the course activities.
