At OpenLearning, we strive to provide a platform where teachers can create socially active and engaging courses for learners to participate in. Part of this involves ensuring that academic integrity is upheld through the use of technology on the platform, so that both teachers and learners can be confident in the learning outcomes achieved.

Whilst using the OpenLearning platform, we expect learners to progress through their courses in an honest and authentic manner. 'Know Your Learner' is a set of features to ensure that academic integrity is upheld and that teachers can be confident in the work submitted by their learners.

There are several components to the 'Know Your Learner' system, meant to determine the learner's identity.

Whenever a learner logs into OpenLearning, we will create an identity session that will record the following information:

  • User-agent (browser / device)
  • IP Geolocation (country / state)

If the learner changes their user-agent or location we will create a new identity session for them which will trigger a facial identity check.

This is conducted every 24 hours if the learner's IP Geolocation or their device / browser changes. A modal will appear and the learner will be asked to allow for camera access to record a 4-second video. The videos will be safely stored in OpenLearning's database and can only be accessed upon request.

The learner can decide to skip the facial identity check, however, they will be marked as unverified for this session and the course staff will be notified.

A keystroke profile will also be created in the background of every session to record the learner's typing behaviour. This profile will be compared within the session when they are typing (i.e. submitting a comment or post). The keystroke profile generated will consist of timings and durations of various key press events to store a baseline of the learner's typing behaviour.

Navigate to Course > Course Setup > Advanced.

Scroll down to Know Your Learner section.

There are two checkboxes which will be available here:

  • the keystroke check will record the typing behaviour of the learner, and
  • the facial identity check will record a short video of the learner's face.

You will be able to see the 'Know Your Learner' checks via Course > Gallery, by clicking on the shield icon on relevant post tiles.

Similarly, the checks will also show on learner comments.

Note: Videos recorded of the learner's face can be accessed upon request to studentsupport@openlearning.com

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection service that promotes academic integrity and improves learner outcomes.

Separate from the 'Know Your Learner' system, you will also have the ability to enable Turnitin for certain learning activities within your courses, to ensure that all work submitted is original and authentic.

You will be able to choose which widgets to enable Turnitin for, such as submitting a file, submitting a text post or submitting a comment.

Go to Institution Settings > Integrations.

Click on Add widget integration at the bottom of the page.

In the Specific provider dropdown, select Turnitin.

Name your integration (for example, "Turnitin for Engineering Faculty") and fill in the Turnitin authentication information.

Click Save and your Turnitin widget integration will be enabled.

Click on the Turnitin integration you have just added to disable or change the details for.

Once a Turnitin integration has been enabled for an institution, course admins under that institution can use Turnitin for select widgets in their courses.

Navigate to Course > Course Setup > Content.

Go into Edit view by clicking on the Edit button

Please note that Turnitin is only available for widgets where you are submitting text.

These widgets are:

  • Post Text widget
  • Post File widget
  • Share anything (thoughts) widget
  • Share anything (file) widget

Go into the Post widget of your choice and click on the Integration tab.

Note: If you don't see this tab, then the widget does not support the Turnitin integration.

Select the Turnitin integration from the dropdown and set up the similarity score percentage that will trigger a warning to you about your learners' submitted work.

You will be able to see your learners' Turnitin similarity score in Course > Gallery, by clicking on the shield icon on relevant post tiles. To see the Turnitin similarity report for a post, click on the View similarity report link.

Note: There are a number of instances in which a learner's post will not get a Turnitin similarity score percentage, despite Turnitin having been enabled for that particular learning activity. These are:

  • File type is not supported by Turnitin
  • Text submitted is less than 20 words
  • Text submitted is over 2 MB size limit
  • Text submitted is over 800 pages limit

In each of these cases, the Turnitin stamp on the learner's post will show the status "Skipped".

Note: The shield icon with the Turnitin similarity score, keystroke check, and facial identity check will only be visible to course staff and the learner who submitted the work.
