Cengage (LTI Tool Provider Setup)

OpenLearning supports multiple technologies to provide interoperability with other systems, tools, and apps. In this article, we will be covering the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integration with Cengage, a digital education content provider and subscription service that allows students to access these contents.

  • A portal subscription with us in order to set up this integration for your courses.
  • Cengage institution subscription.

Retrieve the test site configuration parameters for the Cengage LMS Integration from your Cengage team as this will be needed before Cengage provide the digital solutions to your instructors (for each courses).

Click the Parameters Link located under the “Learning System Configuration” section in the Cengage email that is given by the team. Take note of the URL EndpointKey, and Secret as you need this later when setting up the integration on the platform.

Log in to OpenLearning and navigate to your Institution Settings > Integrations.

Scroll down to the LTI Tool Providers section and click on + Add LTI tool provider.

Enter the tool provider name, and on the Tool provider registration section, select LTI 1.1 for the LTI version.

Enter the details that you get from Cengage in the section below:

  • Launch URL: Cengage domain
  • Consumer Key: Key
  • Shared Secret: Secret

Note: The widget icon will automatically be updated automatically once the correct Launch URL is added to the section above.

Click Save. If the integration is successful, you will see the word Enabled with a green dot below it.

On your preferred course page, click on the Edit button to go into Edit mode.

Go to the Widget menu and select Integration from the category dropdown.

Click or drag the Cengage widget icon onto your page as with any other widget.

Click on the LTI Settings tab and scroll down to Custom Launch URL (optional) section.

Enter the Cengage URL for that particular course/topic into the Custom Launch URL section and click Save.

For the initial setup, kindly use the custom URL that was given by the Cengage team to test the pairing with our platform.

A successful pairing will have the PASS status for the testing criteria:

If this is not configured correctly, the status will show as FAIL:

Upon launching the connection, the user will be required to enter their Cengage credential for the first sign-in. This will enable the SSO feature for each user.

Users will be directed to the dedicated course and view on Cengage depending on their user role. Please do ensure the content is accessible for learners, otherwise, if it's only configured to a specific user role only i.e Instructors, the learners will get this error:
