How do I use the Fill in the blanks widget?

Widgets are the tools with which course administrators create and build the pages of their course.

The Fill in the blanks widget can be used to set up questions where the learners must fill in the missing word in a sentence.

In order to access the Fill in the blanks widget:

  1. Go to the page in your course where you'd like to add this widget.
  2. Select Edit mode.
  3. In the lefthand widget menu, click on the drop-down menu with the word Core and toggle it to Quiz.
  4. Click on the Fill in the blanks widget icon (or you can hold and drag it wherever you'd like on the page).

After adding the widget to your page, you can set it up by following the instructions below:

  1. Click on the Setup tab at the top of the widget.
  2. Edit the widget settings.

Title: You can enter a title or instructions for the learners.

Structure: Here you can set up your fill in the blank sentences. Start typing your sentence regularly. When you want to insert a blank, type the answer into the box on the right and click Add blank.

Word List: All of the answers will appear in the word list. The learners will be able to see and choose words from this list in order to fill in the blanks. Keep in mind that these words are case-sensitive!

Success text: You can change the default "Completed! Well done!"

Invalid text: You can change the default "Check answers."

Completing activities on a page is how learners make progress and receive their certificates or complete the course.

As the administrator, you can modify how each widget tracks this progress.

To do this, click on the Completion Settings tab on the widget and choose one of the following options:

No completion tracking: This widget will not count towards completion.

Completed when student fills in the blanks correctly: This widget will count as completed as soon as the learner provides the correct answer(s).

In the learner view, learners will see a word list to the right of the sentence.

Pro Tip: The words in the list are case-sensitive. Instruct learners to copy and paste the words directly from the word list into the sentence blanks in order to ensure the answers are marked as correct.
