How do I break up a large activity into smaller parts?
On OpenLearning, course creators often design activities to fit into a single page.
For activities with multiple parts, this can result in very long pages.
You can break up large activities into multiple parts using sub-pages.
What are sub-pages?
Sub-pages are pages that have been created under another page. They are used to provide additional structure for course content and activities.
They exist outside the module structure and have their own navigation path but otherwise, behave like any other page. They can be configured to contribute to progress and assessment.
How do I create a multi-part activity?
The easiest way to create a multi-part activity is to add a sub-page index widget to an existing page.
Sub-page index widget
This widget shows the list of sub-pages under the page that it is on.
In the following example, each sub-page represents a part of a larger activity.
The widget acts as an index, to make learners aware that there are multiple parts to this activity.
It also helps Learners know where to start and where they are up to if they do not finish the activity in one session.
Setting up the sub-page index widget
After adding this widget to a page, click the Manage sub-pages button.
This will open the sub-page manager where you can create, reorder and remove sub-pages.
Once you are finished, return to the widget.
You should now see a list of the sub-pages you have just created.
Setting up completion tracking
Within the widget you can specify whether sub-pages (activity parts) are required or optional.
- Required - must be completed before the whole activity is deemed completed.
- Optional - does not affect the completion of the whole activity.
This provides a way to include bonus or optional parts to an activity.
Setting up access control
The sub-page index widget contributes the the completion of a page like any other widget.
If you want to specify that certain pages must be completed before others are accessible, you can do this through the access settings of a page.
Proposed future enhancements
- Be able to structure activities that have non-linear parts.
