How do I assess learners?
Before assessing
Before assessing learners, please make sure the following has been done:
- Set up the correct permissions in roles. Learn more about roles.
- The tasks you would like to assess have been tagged. Learn more about tagging.
- An assessment report has been created. Learn more about assessment reports.
- The learners have completed/submitted their work.
- Optional: you may choose to give the learners the freedom to decide when they would like to be assessed by choosing Assessment settings > Assessment process > Allow students to decide when they are ready to be assessed.
The assessment process depends on the type of assessment you have set up.

Note: If you have allowed the learners to choose when they're ready to be assessed, you will not be able to run the assessment for those who are marked "Not Ready".
Step 3
Click on Run to confirm.
Step 4:
You will now be able to see the learners' results.
Step 5:
Click on Release to make the results available to the learner.
Learn about how learners see the results from their end.
How do I view a learner's answers to the quiz questions?
Please follow the instructions here.
How do I assess learners' criterion-referenced assessment?
Step 1
You can assess learners from the Assess Students page located under Assessment in the sidebar.
Step 2
On this page, you will see a table of all your learners, organised by reports.
Each entry shows how much of that learner's report has been graded. Select one of the entries to begin the assessment.
Step 3
Inside there will be a list of criteria.
Step 4
When you click on criteria, it will expand to give you details on what and how to evaluate.
This should include evidence of learning which is represented by a tagged collection of learner work. If no learner work appears, check that the related activities have been tagged correctly. Learn more about outcome tags.
If a due date for the task was set up, and a learner submitted it late, this will be marked like this:
The assessor has the option to waive the overdue status:
... and/or perhaps adjust the score due to lateness:
Step 5
As you evaluate each criteria, the total score at the bottom of the page will be adjusted to reflect the changes.
Below the total score is a comment box where assessors can include qualitative feedback.
Step 6
Once an assessor has finished evaluating the desired learner(s), they can release the results via the Release button on the learners' list.
Results can be released immediately or on a date in the future. There are also options for releasing each learner report manually.
Step 7
When you release a report, the report results become accessible to the learner. The learner will receive a notification that their results are available. They can then access their report results from the notification or their progress page.
How do I export assessment results?
Step 1
Go to Assessment > Assess students and click on the Export button above "Student Reports".
Step 2
Choose your export format. We recommend "Summary of results" for the simplest export format. Click OK.
You can also export in "Raw scores" if you wish to further scale and manipulate scores outside the platform.
Using a "Raw scores" format also allows you to import adjusted scores from outside the platform.
Note: Should a learner lose internet connection during an exam, OpenLearning has prepared some tips for them to follow here. We advise assessors to ask the learners to provide evidence of their submissions (such as a screenshot or a file). It is up to the course staff to determine whether they allow upload/re-submit and re-assess the exam.
How do I import assessment results?
Step 1
Follow the instructions for How do I export assessment results. Make sure you export a "Raw scores" format.
Step 2
Edit the file you have downloaded. Save.
Step 3
Upload the file by clicking the Import button.
Step 4:
Locate the file on your computer or drag the file and click the Import button.
You can only import from a "Raw scores" format.
Step 5:
The file is successfully imported and the updated assessment results are visible in the chart.
