Customising course notification settings for different roles

The notifications you receive can vary depending on your role in a course, i.e.: whether you are an Administrator, Facilitator, or Learner.

It is up to the Course Administrator to customise Course Notification Settings for each of the different roles in the course. Learn more about different roles in a course.

This can allow Course Administrators to create the right course dynamics for the learners, or to make the course facilitation experience more efficient for Facilitators.

As a user (regardless of your role), you can still customise your personal notification settings for course social activities related to you. Learn more about customising personal notification settings for course social activities related to you.

By default, facilitators will receive OpenLearning platform notifications and daily digest:

  • when there is a new class announcement
  • when there is a new post or top-level comment on:
    • Announcements
    • Homepage
    • All group pages (someone shares or comments within a group they are part of)

By default, learners will receive OpenLearning platform notifications, daily digest and immediate email notifications:

  • when there is a new class announcement

  • when their assessment report is released

  • when someone comments on their assessment evaluations (only if they have been released)

  • when they are issued a credential (certificates and badges)

  • when they are issued an achievement

They will only receive OpenLearning platform notifications and daily digest:

  • when there is a new post or top-level comment on
    • Homepage
    • All group pages (someone shares or comments within a group they are part of)

Learners will also receive an immediate email notification when:

  • they are enrolled in a portal and/or a course (unless the person inviting chose not to send it out)
  • Course start reminder to pre-enrolled learners
  • Course welcome email

By default, course administrators will not be receiving any course notifications unless they assign themselves to the facilitator role.

Step 1

Go to the page where you would like to notify learners or facilitators of new activities. Add a tag under Page Tags.  (Note that you can only use learning outcome tags or normal page tags)

Step 2

Go to Course Setup > Notifications and click on the Facilitators or Learners tab.

Step 3

Under the Learner engagement section, select Pages with specific tags.

Step 4

Specify the tag that you've used to tag the page in Step 1.

 Step 5

 Notes

  1. Every page tagged with the specified tag will send a notification to Facilitators or Learners. Use a unique tag if you want to send notifications for just for one particular page.
  2. If the tag specified in Step 4 doesn't match any of the tags used on course pages, members of the course will not receive any notifications when there is a new activity.
  3. If you add a tag to an access-restricted page, notifications will still be sent for new comments or posts on that page. Users will be able to see the comment and post preview in their notifications but they will not be able to access the comment. However, they might be able to view the post in accordance with the Share settings of the Post widget.
  4. If you add a tag to a group that the learner of facilitator has no access to, they will not receive any notifications.
  5. If you add a tag to group page that a learner or facilitator has no access to, they will still receive notifications for new comments or posts. They will be able to preview the content but they will not be able to access the comment or the post.
