What is multi-factor authentication? How do I set it up?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a way to keep your account secure even if your password is compromised. It adds a second login step to your OpenLearning account by requiring you to enter a 6-digit code in addition to your password when you log in.

You will only need to set up MFA once, using an authenticator app on your smartphone. After the setup, do not delete/uninstall the app from your smartphone. You will need this app to verify your login when you try to access OpenLearning.

Click on your avatar icon/image and choose Account settings from the drop-down menu.

Click Set up multi-factor authentication

Start by entering your password so that we can confirm your identity.

For users signing in via other websites (eg, Microsoft, Facebook or your learning management system), click on Forget password to reset your password before you proceed.

Install an authenticator app on your phone. If you already have one, open it.

For iOS and Android users, we recommend using verification apps such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or Duo.

For Windows mobile and users located in China, we recommend using Microsoft Authenticator

After you've installed or opened the authenticator app, click on Yes, ready to configure.

Using the authenticator app, you will be able to scan the displayed QR code (option A) or enter the key manually (option B).

Option A: scan the code and click on Ready to enter code.

Option B: manually enter the setup key on your authenticator.

 Step 6

Enter the 6-digit verification code you see on your authenticator app. Then, click on Connect phone.

Step 7

Download and save the Emergency Recovery Key in a secure location. If you ever lose access to your phone or authenticator app, you can use this key to log in to your account on OpenLearning.

Once you have downloaded, click on Downloaded, let's finish.

 Emergency Recovery Key is case-sensitive!

Step 8

You have now successfully set up MFA for your account. Next time you log in, you will be prompted to enter a 6-digit key from the authenticator.

Logged-out users: log in with your password and verification code. If you don't have access to your authenticator, use your Emergency Recovery Key.

Logged-in users: skip to Step 2

Go to your Account settings.

Click on Turn off multi-factor authentication.

Confirm your request by clicking on Turn off multi-factor authentication.

Verify your identity with your password and verification code from your authenticator app.

You have successfully turned off MFA.

Go to your Account settings.

Under Multi-factor authentication, click Create new key

Confirm your identity by entering your password and verification code.

If you don't have access to your authenticator, use your Emergency Recovery Key.

Save the new emergency recovery key in a secure location. Once a new Emergency Recovery Key has been created, the old key will expire.

To ensure that your account is secure when you sign in to OpenLearning via other websites, ensure that you have the following setting selected.

Enforcing MFA upon sign-on means you will have to enter a verification code when you sign in via other websites.
