What is customisable in an institution portal?


There are a number of different elements within a portal that are customisable, and you can choose which elements to display based on your needs. You can also customise the order of elements in your portal.

We will be covering how to customise each element throughout our Institution Portal articles.

Below is an overview of what customisations are possible for your portal.

Image size: 1600 x 800 pixels.

Note: The portal header image is responsive, which means it will resize for different screen sizes. Make sure to keep vital information within the mobile safe zone.

We recommend using a white version of your logo, so it displays correctly on the navigation bar.

Customise the titles of navigation bar items and which portal element they anchor to (i.e. when you click it on the navigation bar, it will move the page down to that section).

Set your branding colours, with a CTA colour and an overall Brand Colour. These two colours will be used throughout the portal.

Note: The brand colour will be used for the navigation bar.  As the navigation bar will have text, try to keep the brand colour dark enough to allow white text to be legible.

This setting is optional, it can be turned off or on in the institution settings.

When you invite a learner to your institution portal, they receive an invitation email.

You can set up a custom certificate background within the institution, that can be used across all of your courses if you are using OpenLearning PDF certificate option.

You can change or edit the institution name by going to Institution Settings > Settings > General menu. 

Change or edit the name under Basic > Institution Name section. 

If you see a green tick beside the field, it means the changes that you made to this setting are automatically saved.

The ‘Qualifications’ is a feature in OpenLearning that allows you to combine multiple courses into a single package where you can have both the Core (required) courses and Elective (optional) courses.

There are a number of integration options available:

  • Single sign-on (SSO).
  • Tools which are built as LTI Tool Providers:
    • E.g. Zoom, H5P, etc.
  • Tools that can automate the processing of evidence/submissions:
    • E.g. Checking post content for plagiarism with Turnitin core AP.
  • LRS (Learning Record Stores) - Learning analytics tools:
    • E.g. Scormcloud, Yet Analytics, Watershed LRS, Rustici LRS.

A custom domain is a unique branded name (URL) that identifies a website. For example, instead of having https://www.openlearning.com/abcbakery as your portal URL, you could have your own custom domain such as - www.abcbakery.com.

You can customise your portal's tagline and meta description, that shows up in search engines. In addition, you can also add an institution logo image that will appear on OpenLearning marketplace if you have course(s) listed.
